News Archives 2015-16

6.4.16 AS YOU WERE IN TAFCA! Both teams have performed well in the TAFCA League, particularly with shortage of players being an issue at times - so well done to both teams!! With neither relegation nor promotion at stake last week, the most exciting things were David Findlay's missing glasses - leading to the GREAT GLASSES SEARCH at Kirkcaldy Chess Club - no less exciting was the finish to Pete Selbie's game, where neither player seemed sure whose clock had gone first - I think we are awaiting adjudication!

17.3.16 A TEAM AVOID RELEGATION Following Perth B's default of Wednesday's match, Kirkcaldy A are now safe in division one for another year at least!!

11.3.16 Following an excellent 2-2 draw with Castlehill A, Kirkcaldy A have now moved out of the bottom two and escaped from the relegation zone. With Castlehill having played their games, they cannot catch Kirkcaldy and are doomed to the second flight (we are gutted for you Ray Noble - but Castlehill teams are like buses, and there will probably be a D or E team promoted this year to take their place!!). Crunch match looks to be next week's home fixture against Perth B! Victors in the 2-2 draw were Branislav Sudjic, securing a victory against a much higher graded opponent and Russell Kynoch, who defeated L. Hughes. Special mention should also go to Alastair Wood, who stepped into the breach and made the journey to Dundee on a cold night to put up a great fight against a strong opponent.

10.3.16 An interesting evening's handicap play last night. A good turnout as well, considering most of the B team was absent due to TAFCA commitments. Highlights were the following - Ian Marshall's face upon realizing he would have a mere five minutes to make all his moves, topped only by his look when he found out he'd only have THREE minutes for his second game! Mind you, Ian did go on to win both those games! The final was a match between Russell Kynoch and Scott Deas, both of whom ended up on 3/3. With time running short, there was not long enough to play a full 30 minute game, so an ad-hoc chess version of cricket's 'Duckworth-Lewis' method was invented, whereupon Scott's 27 minutes became 9 and Russell's 3 shrank to a measly ONE!! However, Russell managed to win - even better, he won on time!!

12.3.16 TAFCA B TEAM

Pete Selbie's report: The "B" team were away to Castlehill E last Thursday and after the previous weeks drubbing at home to dundee C a win was badly needed to give us a respectable position in division 2 . First up on board two Neil faced veteran spoiler Robert McLeod who opened d4 Nf3 then allowed Neil early domination of the centre with d5 c5 followed by control of the h2 - b8 diagonal with be6, Qc7. White had an early attempts at blacks king with queen to g4 Ne5 threatening Bh6 at one stage opting instead to return the knight to f3. The knight then faced immediate attack from the bishop on d5 and this combined with the imminent loss of the h pawn, white resigned with most of the pieces still on the board. 0-1 Glenrothes B. On board three scott was busy refuting Lisa Patons d5 gambit reply to e4.keeping the pawn advantage scott consolidated his position and finished in style with a fine queen + knight mate in the black kings corner. 2-0 Board 4 and alastair 's opponent dropped a bishop early doors and lost further material in the middle game to end the tie as a contest and hand Al a fine win. 3-0 Meanwhile top board proved to be a closer contest with young Tom Constance playing an f5 Dutch reply to d4. After placing his f knight on the fine e4 sqare , I replied with knight f3 to e5 and chased his knight with f3. Rather than take the c knight he retreated to f6 and with my opponent yet to castle I sensed an opportunity to open up the centre as my rook was on the e file; playing e4 to start off an exchange sequence to clear his strong f5, d5 pawns + knight and bishop leaving his king exposed and open to threats such as queen h5. Tom found a good defence moving his bishop to G4 forcing my queen off the dangerous white diagonals . Soon after the heavy artillery of rooks and queens were swapped off leaving the 4bishops and 5 pawns apiece.with neither side able to make inroads a draw was agreed. 1/2 : 3 1/2 A good return to winning ways for the B team. After recent disappointing results.
